The Office of Financial Aid is committed to helping students and their families understand the aid programs available at Pomona College, and we strive to assist students as they explore their options in meeting college costs. It explains what to expect and what is required - the rights, as well as the responsibilities - of all students receiving financial assistance. All students who accept financial aid for study at Pomona College should keep this pamphlet for ready reference. By accepting these funds, both the College and the student aid recipient incur responsibilities.
In general, these funds are offered for educational expenses as defined by the Department of Education as applied to all students enrolled at the College.
Funding sources outside the College, including federal and state grants, and outside scholarships, are subject to regulations that ensure that each type of aid is offered only to students who qualify for those programs and will make proper use of the funds. Pomona College is grateful for the generous support of student financial aid through the gifts of private donors, including many Pomona alumni who also were financial aid recipients. Since the fall of 2008, Pomona College has met the demonstrated need of each admitted student with a grant and a modest work stipend, rather than including student loans as part of the need-based offer of financial aid. Comparisons between offers of financial aid should take into account the total volume of loans a student will borrow over four undergraduate years. Financial aid at Pomona College compares favorably with aid at other institutions, both private and public. The College determines how much aid each student is eligible to receive based on each family’s particular circumstances. All of our financial aid is need based - there are no academic, athletic or merit-based awards - and we meet the demonstrated need of each eligible student for all four years. In keeping with our longstanding commitment, the Pomona College financial aid program offers aid to admitted students commensurate with their family’s ability to pay. We also understand that the thought of financing four years of college can be a daunting prospect.
